The Yadkin County unit of the Retired School Personnel has announced the names of the two Yadkin County High School seniors who received the Fred Colby Hobson Scholarships at the awards day programs at the high schools this year.
The recipients are Lindsey Marie Williams from Forbush High School and Samantha Nicole Couch from Starmount High School.
Williams plans to attend Appalachian State University, and she plans to major in elementary education. Williams is the daughter of Mickey and Lisa Williams. They live in Yadkinville.
Couch plans to attend Appalachian State University and major in history education. Couch is the granddaughter of Patricia Gryden who lives in Yadkinville.
Fred Colby Hobson was born in California. His family moved back to North Carolina and he grew up in the Boonville area. He graduated from Boonville High School and later received a bachelor’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1929.
Hobson became superintendent of Yadkin County Schools in 1939 and served until his retirement in 1971. He taught and coached basketball in Elkin and Lewisville before becoming an educational advisor for the Civilian Conservation Coprs in 1935.
Hobson was an avid gardener who worked hard for the betterment of his community. He was active in his church, Yadkinville United Methodist Church, as well as the Yadkin County Historical Society and the Yadkin County Council on Aging.
The Yadkin County unit of the Retired School Personnel has set up the Fred Colby Hobson Scholarship Fund through the Winston-Salem Foundation, Inc.
