Staff Writer

Shannon Ford entered a plea of no contest at the Yadkin County Courthouse on March 26 for embezzlement.

Her husband Joel Ford entered a plea of guilty pursuant to Alford decision for obtaining property by false pretenses and felony aiding and abetting.

The couple was arrested and charged for diverting more than $3,000 from the Boonville Recreational Club in February 2011. The couple used the money to pay for personal expenses, according to court records.

The Boonville Recreational Club serves Boonville youth athletic players and organizes and administrates youth basketball, football, baseball and softball.

According to court records, Shannon Ford of 311 Springwater Drive, Boonville, entered into a plea arrangement in which she would plead no contest to one count of Class H felony embezzlement. In exchange, the state agreed to dismiss 11 other counts of embezzlement and sentenced a maximum punishment of 30 months.

According to court records, Joel Ford, also of 311 Springwater Drive, Boonville, entered into a guilty plea for one count of class H felony obtaining property by false pretenses. In exchange, the state agreed to dismiss 11 other counts of obtaining property by false pretenses and seven counts of felony aiding and abetting and sentenced a maximum punishment of 30 months.

According to court documents, Shannon Ford was the treasurer of the Boonville Recreational Club at the time she was charged. She wrote eight checks from the Boonville Recreational Club account in the amounts of $648.58 to US Cellular, $402.18 to GMAC, $1,400 to an unnamed recipient, $250 to an unnamed recipient, $100 to an unnamed recipient and multiple unauthorized purchases from Sam’s Club.

According to court records Joel Ford’s charges involved the same purchases as listed in Shannon Ford’s charges also using the Boonville Recreational Club’s checking account.

The couple paid a total of $4,717.26 in restitutions, court and legal fees in two separate card payments on March 26. The couple will also serve 30 months of supervised probation.
