There will be a murder in Yadkinville on Oct. 6.

The Downtown Business Association [DBA] will host its second Dinner and Mystery fundraising event at Allison Oaks Vineyard on East Main St. in Yadkinville at 6 p.m.

“It’s an adult play,” said Jim Drum, an actor in the play. “This time we thought about going bigger with a real play but it really didn’t fit into the way we do stuff because we do a lot of ad libs. It’s kind of like Clue.”

Drum said that his wife, Lisa Reavis Drum, wrote the play this time around. Lisa has been a member of the Yadkin Arts Council for several years and has acting experience.

Drum said that when the DBA hosted its first Dinner and Mystery in February this year the play they used was purchased by Allison Oaks Vineyards owners Gene and Pam Gray.

“I’m really impressed with my wife because she volunteered to write it,” Drum said. “We looked at a whole lot of different options before and then she said that I can just write something and use the guidelines of the last one and it’s as good as the last one.”

Drum said that the plot of the play is about a rich man who dies off stage the night before and the gathering of the dinner is a tribute in his honor. Drum who plays the detective will bring in the individual characters and introduces them to the crowd by interrogating them as to their whereabouts the night of the crime.

The actors in the play are Bobby and Trish Todd, Cindy Austin, John Hutchens, Lisa and Jim Drum, Becky and Tony McCarson and some other surprise actors that will be revealed the night of the play.

“The characters and the play are a little risqué and way overblown,” Drums said. “Cindy Austin plays a hussy; her name is Trixie Blue. Tony McCarson plays a gay butler and his wife plays an off the wall psychic.”

Drum said that he has some concerns that the play might ruffle some feathers because of its risqué plotline and characters, but he seems confident that people will wind up finding the humor in it.

“I’m a little concerned that we’ll offend somebody but fortunately there’s a cocktail hour before hand so if it’s like the last time I think everybody will like this because they’re drinking,” Drum said. “We thought it was funny last time because we were drinking too.”

DBA Treasurer Brenda Brown said that the last dinner and mystery was a big success and that the crowd thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

“The applause was wonderful last time,” Brown said. “You could walk outside and you could hear the laughter from up and down the street because everyone was laughing so hard. I didn’t have anything to drink at the last one and I thought it was very funny.”

Drum said that this will probably be this group’s last performance for the Dinner and Mystery event.

“After this we will probably get Cindy Austin to get a group together because everyone has seen this particular group make fools of themselves twice so we need to get a younger group in,” Drum said.

The proceeds from the event will go to help the DBA pay off the debt for the seating area that the organization had built beside the courthouse. Brown said that it has taken the DBA two years to get this project paid off.

Any extra profits that the DBA earns from the event will go towards paying for plants that were used to refill the planters around the downtown area and other projects to benefit the downtown area.

Brown said that the Dinner and Mystery event will be catered by Regal Catering, which is run by Steve Potts.

“This is the same person who did the food last time,” Brown said. “We’re having a salad, Cornish hen, red potatoes, vegetables and a raspberry lemon cake.”

Brown said that the DBA wishes to say a special thank you to Gene and Pam Renegar at Allison Oaks Vineyard for providing their facility for the event for a second time.
