The Yadkin County YMCA mixed healthy living with fun at Saturday’s Healthy Kid Day and Yadkin Health Expo.
“We provided health information and free health screenings for the community,” said Yadkin YMCA Wellness Director Whitney Levens.
YMCA Healthy Kids Day is the largest kid’s health event in the nation. The event had educational activities for families, healthy snacks, bounce houses and face painting. There were also family zumba and family yoga classes, Levens said.
“Research shows that kids are more prone to gain weight and fall behind academically over the summer months if they are not engaged in activities that stimulate the mind and body,” she said.
The Farm Bureau Healthy Living for Life Time bus was at the event and did screenings for cholesterol, blood glucose, blood pressure, bone density and lung functions.
“People were very pleased with the health screenings and the variety of tests we had,” Levens said. “Last year we only screened for cholesterol and body fat.”
About 225 people from the Yadkin County community came out to receive health information and have fun.
“There is no other health fair or this type of information available in the area,” Levens said. “This is a good place for the community to come and to know what resources are available to them.”
