Congressman discharged from hospital

Doctors at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital in Greensboro discharged U.S. Rep. Howard Coble (R-NC) on Wednesday afternoon after providing him with a clean bill of health, according to congressional staffers.

On Tuesday, Congressman Coble, who had been experiencing bouts of dizziness and light-headedness for the past few weeks, was admitted for testing as a precaution.

Upon conclusion of the testing, Coble was informed that all of his vital signs were good and doctors could find no direct cause of the fainting spells.

Congressional aides have been urging Coble to make some healthier lifestyle changes to improve his health, as well as his doctors. Coble agrees.

“I will admit that my dietary and nutrition habits are not exemplary,” Rep. Coble stated, “So I am going to attempt to eat healthier and better balanced meals in the future. I don’t think, however, that I will be adjusting my work schedule any. I hope to remain as visible and accessible in the 6th District and in Washington as in the past.”

Coble said the doctors at Cone told him that all of the heart tests they conducted at the hospital were positive.

The doctors recommended that the 81-year-old representative wear a heart monitor for awhile to see if there is any connection to an irregular heartbeat and the light-headedness.

“Since no votes are scheduled before sequestration takes effect this Friday,” Rep. Coble added, “I will listen to my doctors and rest at home. If something breaks on Capitol Hill before then, I will make every effort to get back in time for any would-be votes.”

Coble was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1984. His district is comprised of all of Surry, Stokes, Rockingham, Caswell, Person counties and portions of Alamance, Guilford, Orange, Durham and Granville counties.

Coble was also hospitalized in late 2011 due to an upper respiratory illness.

When asked if the recent hospitalization raises interest of the committee to focus on a potential challenger for the district, a spokesperson for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee said they’ll differ politically often, but at this time they wish a speedy recovery for Coble.

Well wishes were also expressed locally by Boonville resident Mary Walters, who was in Elkin with her family shopping at Walmart.

“He’s a good leader, but he needs to take care of himself or he can’t lead. It’s probably the food he’s eating up in Washington. He needs some of my southern cooking,” she said.

Walter’s son-in-law David Cane of Dobson wondered if it’s time for Coble to pass the torch.

“I’m not saying a hospital visit should mean a retirement, but let’s face it, the man is 81-years old, and we can probably use a bit of agility up there.”

Congressman Coble is expected to fly back to Washington, D.C. on Monday.
