Yadkin County has released the 2012 Annual Report to the People. The report covers where residents’ tax dollars go, the state of agriculture in 2012, public education information and economic development in the county.
Yadkin County has released its Annual Report to the People sharing details such as taxing information, agriculture and education.
Taxes
The breakdown of the taxpayers dollars showed that 20 percent of taxes go to education, 11 percent goes to general government, 12 percent goes to debt services, one percent goes to cultural recreation, 33 percent goes to human services, 2 percent goes to economic and physical development and 21 percent went to public safety.
The top five taxpayers were Unifi, Inc., Chipita America, Duke Energy, Phillips Van Huesen and Lydall. There are two new additions to the top 10 taxpayer list: Parkdale America LLC and Nonni’s Food Company. TWE Advance NewHouse and Yadkin Valley Telecom have dropped off the Top 10 list from last year.
The county reported that their taxes amounted to about $19 million in revenue for the county.
The report also announces the availability of free smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors from county fire departments. The detectors are made available through a grant from the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services.
A limited number of detectors is provided per family and Yadkin County fire department staff will perform the installation of the device for residents.
Agriculture
The county increased from 9,500 to 9,800 in beef cattle, making it the eighth in the state. Dairy farming maintained a number three ranking in the state for dairy cattle and maintained 10,000 heads of hogs from 2011 to 2012.
Corn dropped from 14,000 acres in 2011 to 12,400 acres in 2012 and maintained the ranking of second in the state in grapes.
The county produced 18,300 acres of hay in 2012 versus 19,700 in 2011 bringing the county to the seventh hay producer in the state. Soybeans dropped from 26,000 acres in 2011 to 17,500 acres in 2012.
Education
The annual report shows that the county provides approximately $7 million a year to local education capital and operations.
The Yadkin County School System serves approximately 6,000 students in grades pre-K through grade 12 in 14 schools. The county supports eight elementary schools, two middle schools, two traditional high schools, one alternative school and the early college.
According to the report, taxpayer dollars were used to produce and mail the report to Yadkin County citizens. The total approximate dollars spent on the report was about $2,075. The report shows that this is approximately 6 cents per individual citizen. There were 18,250 booklets printed, and 18,000 of those were mailed to residents’ homes.
The total cost of the project was $15,632.50, but according to the report, $13,556.85 was paid for through the Get Alarmed Grant, an initiative to reduce residential fire injury and death in North Carolina.
