Yadkin County will see the construction of the jail addition break ground no later than May 7.

The initial lowest responsive bid was received from Edison Foard, Inc. but had to be withdrawn after a typo within the bid resulted in inaccuracies.

Bordeaux Construction placed the next lowest bid on bid day, which took place on March 15. The county has since been working with Bordeaux Construction to find as many ways as possible to cut back on the company’s initial $6,739,500 bid.

“We’ve cut the cost down by $620,000 so far,” said County Manager Aaron Church at the April 16 county commissioner’s meeting.

Church said that those costs were a result of scrapping plans for an irrigation system for the lawn, changes to the some of the cell doors, a staircase and the type of concrete sealant used.

There is also talk of changing the type of brick that will be used on the jail addition that could result in further savings.

“The largest cost savings comes from extending the project by two months,” Church said.

This extension will allow Bordeaux Construction 14 months instead of the initial requirement of 12 months that was stipulated in the bid agreement. The savings of this extension equals $161,000.

Church said that the county would like to see ground break on the construction of the jail addition no later than May 7, and the county has plans to sign the bid contract by the end of this week.

County Commissioners approved Church to sign the bid contract, allowing $6.135 as the maximum limit for the project.
