A group of soldiers on active duty in Afghanistan participated in Race More For Macemore from over 7,000 miles away.
Several families joined together to honor Austin Macemore and to raise money for his family at the Race More For Macemore 5K run and fun walk event on Jan. 26.
Forbush Elementary School students showed up in support of Austin Macemore’s second battle with cancer.

Race More For Macemore took place on Jan. 26 in downtown Yadkinville. The event saw a turnout of 1,200 registered runners and walkers and over 1,100 in attendance.
Despite snow and ice just days earlier thousands turned out to brave the cold and race to raise money for Austin and his family.
Austin Macemore, a 2012 Starmount High School graduate, lost his long fought battle with cancer on Jan. 29 at 5:20 a.m. He was just 19 years old.
“This morning at 5:20 a.m. peacefully, in no distress, our Austin has began his life living in the loving arms of Christ,” his uncle posted on the Austin and Friends Facebook page. “His body is restored and his message that he was sent here to deliver of the love and salvation through Christ has reached many.
“It is up to us lot continue Austin’s message of God’s plan for all of us. This child of God has made such a difference to so many in so many ways we could only wish to make the impact that he made,” the message continued. “The message that he proclaimed we all should be following…We believe today as much as yesterday that Austin is a miracle and was a miracle to so many. Austin would want you to take a look at your life and challenge to be all you can be.”
Austin was the son of Teena and Wayne Macemore of Yadkin County. He was a four-year star wrestler and soccer player for the Rams in high school.
Macemore capped his high school career by earning the “Heart of a Champion” award from the North Carolina High School Athletic Association last year, given to student-athletes who “demonstrate outstanding sportsmanship.”
His passing comes just days after the Race More For Macemore event that drew a crowd of thousands to the streets of downtown Yadkinville to run and raise money for Macemore and his family.
The event which took place on Jan. 26 was delayed until noon due to the inclement weather but despite the ine and snow the event saw a turnout of 1,200 registered runners and walkers and over 1,100 in attendance.
“It was truly a blessing from a gracious God that we were able to, not only, overcome the conditions and run the race but enjoy precious time together while we waited,” said Roby Snyder in a statement sent to racers via email. “The support you showed for Austin and his family was overwhelming.
“From the beginning, it was clear this was never just a race but an opportunity for a community to show love and compassion to a very much loved young man, as well as, one another,” the statement continued. “I hope you will join Austin Macemore and friends sometime next year for the Second Annual Race More For Macemore event.”
The Jan. 30 “Pin Cancer for Macemore” night will be free admission at Starmount High School. A memorial service will begin at 6:30 p.m. with a wrestling match to follow.
