Starmount, Elkin dominate all-conference team

BOONVILLE - While Wilkes Central swept the top Mountain Valley Conference football awards, Starmount and Elkin littered the all-conference lists when the conference released the annual honors last month.

Fourteen Rams were named to the All-MVAC team or honorable mention list with 10 Buckin’ Elks earning honors. Forbush placed five on the end-of-the-year awards lists.

Headlining the recipients for Starmount included repeat winners Chaston Martin, Zach Worley and Michael Wood. The senior trio was joined by Garrett Stokes, Luke Wagoner, Will Simpson, Will Lambert and Parker Gunnell on the all-conference team.

Hunter Myers, James Watson (offense and defense nomination), Mason Welborn, Josh Houser and Dalton Vestal were named honorable mentions. Simpson added an honorable mention honor on offense after an All-MVAC nod on defense.

Jamey Cranford captured his second-straight all-conference award to highlight Elkin’s award-winners. Josh Strickland, Jamiles Hayes, Sam Lane and Kody King joined the senior on the All-MVAC team.

Mitchell Abbey, Cory Anderson, Seth Creed, Coley McCulloch and Tyler Stoltzfus were named honorable mentions for the Elks. Lane earned an honorable mention on defense in addition to his all-conference honor as a tight end.

Matthew Stanley and Alex Torres earned all-conference nominations for Forbush, while Jordan Sawyers, Nick McDonald and Cody Shrewsbury were named honorable mentions.
