EAST BEND - After remaining unbeaten for the first 10 games of the season, the top-ranked Falcons fell last Thursday in a marquee Mountain Valley Conference matchup.

At 9-0-1 on the year, Forbush dropped a crucial battle for the conference’s top spot with one-loss Ashe County, falling 4-3 Thursday in East Bend.

The Falcons, now 10-1-1 overall and 6-1 in conference play, bounced back with a 5-2 win over Elkin Monday night. They now set their sights on a rematch with Yadkin County neighbor Starmount Thursday night in Boonville.

Forbush edged the Rams 4-3 in a thrilling slugfest to open conference play in August. The Falcons lead Starmount (6-3-1, 4-3) for the second 2A seed from the conference in the upcoming state playoffs, with both squads looking up at Ashe.

In volleyball, Starmount swept Forbush in three sets Thursday.

The unbeaten Rams won 25-15, 25-19 and 25-12 to sweep the season series from their rivals.

Ashton Gregory paced Starmount with 12 kills and six blocks on the afternoon, while Hayley Hartman added five kills and 10 digs.

Erin Barr recorded 27 assists and three kills, while Rachel Wagoner and Hunter Welborn finished with five kills apiece. Josie Matthews added four kills with Sydney Caudle pitching in eight digs.

In football, Forbush dropped to 0-6 with a 28-7 loss to previously winless Alleghany Friday night.

The Falcon offense managed more offense than in previous weeks, but struggled to find the end zone. Quarterback Bennett Winslow led the way with 103 yards of total offense (52 rushing yards, 51 passing yards) and scored the only touchdown of the night.

Sophomore tailback turned in his best performance of the season, rushing for 70 yards to lead the Falcon ground game. Sophomore Tyler Holden added 21 yards on the ground.

G.C. Parks snatched two catches for 24 yards, while Holden, D.J. Durham and Cameron Butner hauled in a catch each.

Matthew Stanley and Parks powered Forbush’s defense with 14 and 10 tackles, respectively, while Cody Shrewsbury and Todd Patterson added eight stops each. Parks recorded two interceptions on the night.

The Falcons return to action Friday when they head to Moravian Falls to take on 4-1 (3-0) Wilkes Central.
