Boonville Mayor Scott Whitaker has accepted a position as the new town manager for Summerfield, N.C.
He will step down as Boonville’s mayor in the near future as details of a transition plan are solidified. Whitaker will begin his new role with Summerfield in mid-June; he was selected for the post from a nationwide search and a pool of about 60 applicants.
Summerfield is largely regarded as a growing, northern suburb of Greensboro and is currently a community of more than 10,000 people and 27 square miles. Summerfield was incorporated in 1996 and grew rapidly during the 1990s and most of the 2000s, slowly transforming from a rural farming area into a bedroom community.
Although excited about the opportunity, Whitaker is saddened to leave Boonville. He served two elected terms on its council and was elected as its mayor in 2009.
“Boonville is our home,” Whitaker said. “I began a graduate program with the mindset of staying and using my degree and experience professionally in Boonville or Yadkin County. My intention has always been to serve my full term, but supporting my family and being utilized take precedence despite my love for Boonville, its people and for public service here. Leaving for a new life chapter in the near future will be bittersweet for our family, but I feel as though I’ve helped Boonville in some key ways.”
While operating Whitline Ink in Boonville since 1996, Whitaker developed a love for local and area government that has spanned 13 years.
Aside from his Boonville service, he is currently the chairperson for the Yadkin County Economic Development Council. He has served on Crossroads Behavioral Healthcare’s board of directors for nine years, chairing in 2008 and 2009. Whitaker served for several years on the area’s council of governments board, chairing in 2004, along with numerous other boards and committees.
His Whitline Ink creative work has won numerous awards, and he was recognized by The Business Journal as a “40 Leaders Under Forty” award-winner in 2008 for his professional and personal contributions. Whitaker will complete his master of public administration (MPA) degree from Appalachian State University in August.
