STORYTIME for preschoolers will be held on Thursday, October 11, 2012 at 10 a.m. at the Yadkin County Public Library. STORYTIME is an early literacy program specifically geared for preschoolers 2-5 years old.

The theme for this week’s program will be “Dots and Spots: Fire Dog Tales”, featuring the letter “D” and highlighting the literacy skill, print awareness. All STORYTIME programs are free and open to the public. Make plans now to bring your child or grandchild for an entertaining and educational experience, with stories, music and crafts as we help get them “Ready to Read” with the “Every Child Ready to Read @ your Library” program.

On display at the library is a collection of memorabilia, commemorating 100 years of Girl Scouts. This includes pictures, uniforms and more. The display has been traveling to all 16 counties of the local Triad Girl Scout Council. They have recently merged to form the Peaks to Piedmont Council which includes 40 counties. Come visit the library to see this collection on display until mid November.

A flu clinic for Veterans will be scheduled for Thursday, November 1, 2012 from 9:30 am to 1:00 pm at the Yadkin County Public Library. If you live in Surry, Stokes, Wilkes or Yadkin counties, a veteran and are currently enrolled in VA health services, you are eligible for a free flu shot. Please bring your valid military ID or DD-214 and a photo ID.

Writer Belle Boggs will be offering a free memoir workshop on Monday, November 12, 2012 from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm at the Yadkin County Public Library. Workshop participants will read and discuss a variety of memoirs inspired by nature and will consider the question, how does where you live affect who you are? Participants in the workshop can choose to share their writing on the web with Forbush and Starmount Middle School students and will be invited to a writing celebration in the Willingham Theater at the Yadkin Cultural Arts Center on Thursday, November 15, 2012 at 6:30 pm. With a limit of 20 participants, pre-registration is required. Please call the library at (336) 679-8792 to reserve your spot. The Memoir Workshop is a collaboration between the Yadkin Arts Council and Yadkin County Middle Schools and is funded by a grant through the North Carolina Arts Council.

Are you interested in learning how to research your family history or in need of help in using Ancestry.com? Patricia Rogers is hosting an ongoing workshop from 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm on Thursday afternoons. Patricia’s workshop will focus on using Ancestry.com Library Edition and assisting with genealogy questions and issues. Come learn what all Ancestry.com Library Edition has to offer.

This workshop is free and open to the public. No preregistration is required. Need to research your family, but cannot attend the workshop? Ancestry.com Library Edition is available for use, with a valid library card, at any library branch within the NWRL system. Free access will be available through the end of December. The Yadkin County Public Library is a member of the Northwestern Regional Library system, comprised of libraries in Alleghany, Stokes, Surry and Yadkin counties. The library’s normal operating hours are as follows: Mondays and Thursdays 8:30 am – 6:30 pm and Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 8:30 am – 5:30 pm.
