The Yadkin County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously to approve an agreement with Pepsi Co. to supply scoreboards and Pepsi equipment at the Yadkin County Park ball fields in return for an exclusive five year contract with the soda company.

Jason Walker, department head for Yadkin County Department of Parks and Recreation has been working on the agreement with Pepsi Co. for the past few months. The soda giant offered to supply scoreboards and vending machines in the ballpark area of the county park if the county would sign a five year contract to exclusively sell Pepsi products during sporting events.

Due to stipulations in the contract the products must be purchased from Pepsi Co. in Jonesville.

Walker said that prior to this agreement team parents and coaches were traveling to places like Sam’s Club and Costco and buying soda products in bulk so this new venture would actually balance out and probably save some money since the products will be delivered by PepsiCo.

The vending machines that the company will provide will also result in commission dollars for the county.

Walker said that the park is nearing completion but the parking lot timetable has been set back due to heavy rains around the holidays. He says that the goal is to have the parking lot paved and complete with signage and scoreboards up and functioning before a softball tournament that is scheduled in March.

Other important points from the Jan. 7 meeting:

-The board was asked to set a public hearing to get county resident’s feedback on the County Commissioners assuming direct control of the activities of the board of health and the social services board. County Manager Aaron Church said that there are many different directions the board could choose to pursue their control over these boards if they chose to do so but if the board did vote to assume control they would take over direct control and act as both of the boards and would be advised by a group of professionals in the various areas of the board. The board could also vote to consolidate the board of health and the social services board into one human services board. The commissioners voted unanimously to set a public hearing on Monday, Feb. 8 at 7 p.m.

-The board announced that it would hold a budget and capital improvement plan workshop on Jan. 15 at 9 a.m. in the commissioner’s room of the county offices. Revisions to the county’s personnel policy may also be reviewed at that time.

-The board voted to approve the appointments to each fire departments Firefighter’s Relief Fund Board of Trustees. 10 appointees were approved from fire departments across the county.
