A new quiz bowl champion has been crowned.

Surry Central High School walked away with the trophy and bragging rights to this year’s annual Northwestern Regional Library Quiz Bowl

The bowl was held on March 9 at Andy Griffith Playhouse in Mount Airy. The event was originally scheduled for January 19 but was rescheduled due to inclement weather.

Quiz Bowl is an annual academic competition between high school teams who compete in subjects including language, social studies, arts, science, and current events. Each match challenges two high school teams against each other to earn the most correct answers and points.

This year’s competing teams were East Surry High School, Elkin High School, North Surry High School, South Stokes High School, Stokes Early College, Surry Central High School, Surry Early College and Yadkin Early College. Starmount was scheduled to compete but was unable to attend due to the reschedule.

The competition began at 10 a.m. and ended with Surry Central and Surry Early College competing in the finals. Surry Central won for a second year in a row with a score of 155 to 75.

Brack Llewellyn moderated the bowl. The bowl’s judges were Homer Dearmin, Beth Lyon-Smith and Wayne Matthews and Mt. Airy Commissioner Shirley Brinkley gave a special welcome.

The NWRL wishes to extend a special thank you to the Andy Griffith Playhouse, Friends of the Jonesville Library, Friends of the Mount Airy Public Library, Friends of the Walnut Cove Public Library and Ken White at the Andy Griffith Playhouse.
