Yadkin county residents can enjoy a glass of wine and help out some furry friends at the same time.

The first Whiskers and Wine event will take place at Allison Oaks Vineyards on Aug. 31 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. The proceeds from the event will go to the Yadkin County Animal Shelter.

“What led us to this project were the changes taking place at the Yadkin County Animal Shelter,” event coordinator Alice Singh said. “In the past the adoption rates have not been that great. The changes that have happened under the new director of the shelter have been great. I really believe in what she’s doing.”

The event is hosted by For the Animals, Inc., a 501c3 non-profit organization. This is the first major fundraising project for the organization.

“For the Animals, Inc. was started about five or six years ago,” said Stephanie Ridout-Danner, organization board member and Yadkin County resident. “The organization and some Yadkin County residents are getting together as a whole to do this event for the animal shelter. All of the money raised will go through the non-profit organization so that it will be tax deductible.”

Since the animal shelter is a county funded service, any fundraisers must be done by an outside organization, and then the profits may be donated to the shelter for specific purposes.

“For the Animals, Inc. and the staff at the Yadkin County Animal Shelter sat down and discussed what areas of the shelter we would like to see improvements in,” Singh said. “Once the money is raised we will write a check to the shelter with a designation of what we would like that money to be used for.”

Singh said that the shelter expressed a need for a horse trailer that will allow them to pick up sick, injured or rescued large animals and bring them back to the shelter for care and adoption. For the Animals, Inc. hopes to raise the money to provide the trailer through the sale of raffle tickets.

“Before Anna came along there wasn’t much help for the large animals in the county and there wasn’t much that could be done for them because of the resources that the shelter had,” Ridout-Danner said. “I’m a horse person and so it’s important to me that Anna has the ability to go pick horses or other large animals up when there’s an emergency or a need.”

Ridout-Danner said that another goal for the non-profit organization is to raise enough money to provide a small barn and holding facility for large animals.

Singh says that the organization also plans to add money to the shelter’s building fund and to set up a medical fund at a local veterinary office to help treat sick or injured animals that come in to the shelter for adoption.

“That way if the staff gets a dog in that is sick, or has mange or whatever it might need, then the shelter has funds to use towards getting that animal healthy,” Singh said. “I would like to see at least $1,000 in that fund to start with.”

Singh says that For the Animals would like to see a total of $5,000 to $6,000 raised from this event. The organization has a goal to sell 200 tickets and currently has a little over 100 tickets sold.

One of the major attractions at the Whiskers and Wine event will be an appearance by Netop the Painting Pooch. Netop is a rescue pet adopted in New Hanover County, NC. Netop’s adopted owner, an artist herself, saw potential in the energetic little pup and decided to let him try out painting.

Once his owner places a brush in his mouth, Netop gets to work creating his masterpieces. Netop’s work is always donated to the event for which he’s appearing. His owner’s donate their time and travel to let the creative pooch create art for a good cause.

Singh said that she has been following Netop for many years and she knew she had to have him for the Whiskers and Wine event.

“I went to an SPCA of the Triad fundraiser in Greensboro about five or six years ago and they had a painting dog there. This is how I learned about Netop,” Singh said. “His owner sets up an easel for him and puts a paintbrush in his mouth and he’ll paint. Netop will create two paintings during the event and we plan to do a live auction of those.”

The Whiskers and Wine event will also feature music by Time Sawyer, heavy hors d’oeuvres, door prizes, raffle items and silent auction. Anna Hamby, Yadkin County animal Shelter director, will be giving a presentation about what’s going on at the shelter now and Singh will be giving a presentation about the history of the shelter and how far it’s come.

“Our main goal with this event is to gain more support from the voters in Yadkin County,” Singh said. “We hope people will come out and support the animals at the Yadkin County Animal Shelter.”

Anna Hamby is also excited about the awareness and funds this event will bring to the shelter.

“Yadkin County Animal Shelter is very grateful for this committed group of citizens and their support,” Hamby said. “We are excited about this awesome event and the new resources that it will bring to our shelter. We are working toward having transportation and housing for large animals, as well as enrichment areas for our current small animal program- this event will be a great boost to meet these goals.”

Tickets for this event are $30 and include one glass of wine, heavy hors d’oeuvres and a door prize entry. Tickets can be purchased at Allison Oaks Vineyard located at 221 E. Main St. in Yadkinville or by contacting Alice Singh at 336-406-0965 or at whiskers.wine@yahoo.com.
