Forbush quarterback Bennett Winslow threw for 148 yards and one score in Friday’s 20-14 loss to North Surry.
MOUNT AIRY - Forbush dropped a hard-fought 20-14 decision to North Surry Friday night to open the season.
Junior quarterback Bennett Winslow threw for 148 yards on 7-of-14 passing to lead the Falcons offensively. Winslow completed two passes to tight end Matthew Stanley for 67 yards, while G.C. Parks hauled in 81 yards on five catches, including a 21-yard grab in the end zone that received praise from WXII 12’s Kenny Beck on High School Playbook after the game.
Tailbacks Tyler Holden and Jordan Sawyers rushed 45 and 28 yards on the ground, respectively. Holden scored a late touchdown in the fourth quarter.
The teams battled to a scoreless first quarter, before the Falcons struck first on Parks’ touchdown catch early in the second.
Minutes later, North Surry answered on a touchdown pass from Austin Handy to Shawn Dehart to knot the game at 7-7.
With the score still tied in the third, the Greyhounds grabbed the lead on a Blaze Acord touchdown run. Early in the fourth, North extended the lead with a Dehart touchdown run.
Forbush rallied and found the end zone with 4:44 left on the clock on Holden’s score.
But the Falcons were unable to stop North from running out the final minutes off the clock, falling 20-14.
The Forbush defense held the Greyhounds to 285 yards on the night, led by Cody Shrewsbury (11 tackles, one sack), Nick McDonald (two tackles, fumble recovery) and Parks (10 tackles).
The Falcons return to the field Friday against reigning 2AA state champion West Stokes in the home-opener. The Wildcats fell 41-7 to Albemarle in Week 1 after post a perfect 16-0 mark last season.
The final non-conference game for Forbush is set to kick off at 7:30 p.m. in East Bend.
