The North Carolina Daniel Boone Trail, Inc. will sponsor an unveiling of the new painting, “Daniel Boone Crossing the Shallow Ford”, on Dec. 2 from 2:30-4:30 p.m., at Whippoorwill Village and Academy in Ferguson during its Christmas Open House.

Patricia Hobson, nationally-known artist from Yadkin County, completed this painting in 2012. She will describe her painting and its importance. Exclusive, limited-edition prints of the painting will be available. Proceeds will help develop a Daniel Boone driving trail through the ten counties of the Yadkin Valley in northwest North Carolina. As this trail is completed, planners expect more tourists to visit the area.

The North Carolina Daniel Boone Trail chose Hobson to depict Boone and his family entering the Yadkin Valley in the spring of 1752 to settle in what is now Davie County. Hobson did extensive research to make this painting an accurate one. She shows Daniel Boone, 17 years old, leading the way across the Yadkin River. He is dressed like a hunter of the day. He carries his rifle across his chest. He is ready to kill game or repel any threat in the forest. On the bank of the river stand his parents, Squire and Sarah Morgan Boone. They oversee the crossing of their large family of over thirty members. The faces of the Boones show expectancy as they reach their new home and relief that their two-year trek from Pennsylvania is almost over.

The Daniel Boone Heritage Trail knows that Daniel Boone and his family lived in at least three home sites in Wilkes County. Boone also frequented hunting sites along the Yadkin River and in the nearby Brushy Mountains. The trail seeks the location of other sites that Boone visited, including campsites and homesteads. Boone launched his famous expeditions to Kentucky from his home along the confluence of the Yadkin River and Beaver Creek near present day Ferguson. Today, you can visit a replica of one of Boone’s log cabins at Whippoorwill Village and Academy, which is a short distance from Boone’s last Wilkes County home site.

The trail hopes to meet Boone descendants living in the area. Jonathan Boone helped establish Head of the Yadkin Baptist Church, now called Yadkin Valley Baptist Church, near Patterson.

The event is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Whippoorwill Academy on the Internet or (336) 973-3237.
