The Yadkin Relay For Life held its annual awards ceremony and kick off celebration on Sept. 10 at Peace Haven Baptist Church in Yadkinville.
Members from PVH and Yadtel were named Grand Club members because their businesses were able to earn $1,000 or more for the 2012 Relay For Life events.

Community Director Allison Reeves led the event. She shared that Yadkin County was able to serve 71 individuals with 126 requests in the 2011-2012 cycle. Of those served, 37 patients needed information, two needed health insurance assistance, 18 participated in the “I Can Cope” program, three participated in the “Look Good, Feel Better” program, three needed prescription assistance, 31 needed transportation assistance and two were assisted through other unnamed programs.
“Our average is 2.1 services per patient this year,” said Reeves. “Our goal is to reach 2.5 services per patient. We are very close to that and I think we can accomplish that this year.”
Reeves said that no patients were denied or wait listed for services this year, an achievement from years passed. She stressed the importance of maintaining a presence in Raleigh, as they have to fight each year to maintain funding for Relay For Life programs.
Reeves reminded attendees that they could join the American Cancer Society’s CAN Club for $10 a year to learn more about the government side of things. The Yadkin Relay For Life was able to hit its goal of 20 Can Club members last year but Reeves says that the club would like to continue to increase their members.
Once business was tended to, Reeves began to announce the participation certificates for business and teams that participated in last year’s Relay For Life event. Nearly 100 certificates were announced and team members were honored for their participation.
Sponsors were honored next for donations of items or monetary donations.
Special recognition awards were the highlight of the evening. Flatrock Baptist Church received the Traveling Trophy for having the largest amount of cancer survivors on its team.
April Hutchens won third place in individual awards for raising $1,370. Robin Cox won second place for raising $2,590 and Allison Reeves won first place for raising $2,995. Reeves opted to not present herself with an award.
Pilot View Friends received the Veteran Team Award and were praised for raising $4,792. The Hope Award was given to West Yadkin School. The Rookie Team was awarded to the Yadkin County Sheriff’s Department who raised $4,960 and the Spirit of Relay Award was given to Windsor Crossroads Ruritan Club, which raised $5,345.
Boonville Baptist Beacons were awarded third overall for raising a total of $8,449. PVH was given second place overall for raising $9,035 and Unifi was named Relay For Life champions once more when they were give first place for raising $9,737.
Reeves announced that Yadkin Relay For Life finished the year with $95,600 and went $10,165 over their goal set for the year.
“I think we can absolutely be a $100,000 community,” Reeves said. “I think that we will accomplish that with this year’s Relay.”
Yadkin County Relay For Life has teamed up with Pizza Hut and will host a percentage night once a month during which teams can volunteer to serve, bus tables and carry out food to customers to earn 10 percent of sales for the evening. The events will take place from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Teams interested in signing up for a night should contact Renee Hayes at rhayes662000@yahoo.com.
The team also has a Cruisin’ event and Sock Hop scheduled at the Yadkin County Arts Council on Sept. 29 from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. There will be cruising around the block, live music, a retro dance and vendors. Percentages of sales from the Third Branch Café and Nate’s Place will go towards Relay For Life.
