EAST BEND - The Lady Falcons opened the 2012 season in a big way.

Forbush swept visiting Elkin in straight sets in dominating fashion, 25-15, 25-11 and 25-11 for its first win of the young season.

“We have a very young team,” head coach Angie Funk explained. “They played well together tonight. We have a lot of work ahead of us for the season, but it was a good start.”

Funk pointed to the Falcons’ communication on the court as a key to the win.

“They talked more than they have in their scrimmage games and I think that paid off,” she said.

In the first set, Forbush jumped out to a 12-3 before Elkin battled back to 14-9. But the Falcons closed the set on a 11-6 run to take a 1-0 lead.

Forbush was even more dominant in the second and third sets.

In the second set, the Lady Elks held the game close, trailing just 14-8. From there, the Falcons closed on a 11-3 run for the 2-0 advantage.

In set three, Elkin held a 3-2 lead early on before Forbush built a 12-point lead en route to a 25-11 sweep.

Outside hitter Mackenzie Dudley led the way with 15 kills, while Jessica Funk added 13. Mallory Choplin recorded 11 kills, while Quinn Bishop and Regan Gentry combined for 21 kills.

“This was a good way to start off the season,” Funk added.

Forbush battles Starmount and West Wilkes this week.
