EAST BEND — Yadkin County All-Stars won the 10U Cal Ripken State Tournament hosted at Fall Creek Elementary School last week. The team started with a tough 6-3 win over Union County Waxhaw on Saturday morning for their first win in the State Tournament. They led with a strong performance on the mound by Colton Moxley, Nohr Issa and Dylan McClamrock.
The second game of the day saw Yadkin win 20-11 against MARA. Yadkin jumped out early in this game due to a grand slam in the first inning by Craig McBride. Sam Hemrick was two for three with three RBIs. Yadkin led with great pitching by Westin Vestal and Joseph Barnes. Barnes closed the door in the sixth inning on just 12 pitches.
Game three on Sunday saw Yadkin face a scrappy East Rowan team. East Rowan had an early 7-1 lead over Yadkin. Yadkin worked back into the game scoring a few runs each inning. Garret Pack came in and shut East Rowan down on the mound with a very strong pitching performance only giving up one run over the final four innings. Yadkin won the game with a final score of 10-8. This was the last game of pool play where Yadkin went 3 and 0.
Yadkin was a three seed coming out of pool play into bracket play. The first game was against Surry South on Monday. Yadkin won the game 10-0 in five innings. Yadkin was led by great pitching again from Vestal, Moxley and Issa. Game two of bracket play saw Yadkin play a very good Union County Waxhaw team again. Yadkin was led in this game by timely hitting late in the game from Brayden Snow, Garret Pack and Hayden Royal who all drove in runs late to give Yadkin an 8-7 win and moved them into the State Championship game against South West Athletics Blue.
The State Championship game started great for Yadkin with lead off singles from Pack and Moxley, followed by a two-run triple by Gavin Maines. Maines was 4-for-4 in the final game and pitched the final three innings coming in as the closer for McClamrock. Yadkin won the final game 19-8 to advance to the South East Regionals in Williamsburg, Virginia, on July 18. The championship was won with hard-nose defense, great pitching, and timely hitting.
