Just as things went for the Elkin football team, the Elkin men’s basketball team is still trying to win its first game of the season.

On Wednesday night, the Elks (0-6) matched up with the Forbush Falcons (5-2). The Falcons came in to the game looking to get their winning streak back on track, while Elkin was looking to earn its first win of the season. Unfortunately for the Buckin’ Elks, the Falcons were too much to handle. Forbush came up with a 69-26 win over the Elks to earn its second win in a row.

Elkin didn’t give up easy, as it made the Falcons work for the lead in the first quarter. Josh Wood gave Forbush a 1-0 lead after he made a free throw, but the Elks answered back on the next possession with a basket by Austin Longworth. From there, both teams battled back and forth until Elkin took a 10-7 lead at the end of the quarter.

During the second quarter, Jackson Cooper and Tyler Campbell got the Falcons back on the right foot to tie the game, 10-10. Forbush then went on a scoring run as Logan Lineberry and Mich Cranfill used their long-range shooting to swing the game’s momentum back to the Falcons. Wood and Travis Gardner used their defensive stances and their strength to drive to the basket to give Forbush a substantial lead over Elkin. The Falcons held the Elks to just one point in the second quarter. Forbush was able to come up with 24 points to take a 31-11 lead at halftime.

The Falcons kept things up in the third quarter as they scored 18 points and held Elkin to six points. Lance Kennedy dropped a two-point shot and a three-pointer for the Falcons, while Alex Boyles and Jared Bowman were able to drop two points each. Elkin’s six points came from Beau Burgess and Tanner Sturdivant, who scored two baskets.

The Falcons kept up their scoring potential in the fourth quarter as they outscored the Elks 18-9. Alex Boyles knocked in a three-point shot, and Tony Douglas came up with a basket as time was winding down. At the end of the fourth quarter, Forbush came away with a 69-26 win over Elkin.

Every player, but one, scored for the Falcons. Jarrett Hall came away with 14 points, Lance Kennedy and Logan Lineberry each had 14 points. Mich Cranfill knocked in eight points, Josh Wood had six points, Alex Boyles had five, Jackson Cooper and Travis Garnder had four points. Tyler Campbell, Tony Douglas and Jared Bowman each had two points. Woods-Hargrove didn’t score for the Falcons, but he was essential with his rebounding and his assists.

For Elkin, Sturdivant had eight points, while Ezra Atkinson, Korbin Powell and Beau Burgess all had four points. Three players for the Elks had two-points each — Tristin Shears, Brandon Loredo and Austin Longworth.

Elkin moves to 0-7 for the season, the Elks meet up with West Wilkes on Friday. Forbush moves to 6-2 overall, the Falcons meet up with West Wilkes on Monday.
