As thunder struck many times in Elkin Monday night, so did the opposing team for the Buckin’ Elks soccer season opener.
The Hibreten Panthers put offensive pressure on Elkin High School early and did not let go for a 6-0 rout. The larger school out of Lenoir was relentless early on, taking advantage of a lack of strong defense on the transition, allowing the Panthers to get some clear shots at net. Elkin had some opportunities to put some offensive pressure on but couldn’t capitalize. Hibriten did.
“We gave them looks early and they capitalized on every single one,” Elkin Head Coach Heath Foster said. “We had some good moments of soccer but right now, our fitness and touch, some chemistry issues, it’s good to get a piece of humble pie this early on to see where you’re struggling. It’s good to get a reality check right out of the gate.”
Elkin didn’t look very aggressive on defense early on, allowing two goals in the first eight minutes, then allowing a third a few minutes later.
Elkin then traveled to North Surry for a Tuesday night matchup. At press time, results were not posted. The Buckin Elks next game is Saturday afternoon at Surry Central at 2 p.m.
