RONDA — Rain thwarted the first tennis match for East Wilkes High School yet again on Wednesday afternoon. After their matchup against North Stokes was postponed Tuesday, they only got a bit of tennis in, meaning those wanting full results of the Cardinals’ season opener will have to wait.
With two singles matches, and doubles matches yet to be complete, the East Wilkes Cardinals lead North Stokes 3-1. The Cardinals gave glimpses of spectacular depth in the program, as Cardinals junior Abby Reeves defeated Alyssa Collins 7-5, 6-2 as the No. 6 seed, while junior Brie Jarvis (6-0, 6-1) and senior Brooke Schubert (6-0, 6-1) got wins as the No. 4 and No. 5 seeds on the team.
Heavy rain set in shortly thereafter with some matches left to be complete. Despite the lead, the matchup is closer than it seems. North Stokes’ Brittany Brown is leading East Wilkes senior Amber Parks 6-3, 1-4 while junior Maddi Lester is down to North Stokes’ Abby Williams 7-5, 3-4.
Play will resume Sept. 9 with the completion of singles, with doubles likely determining the winner of this tight match.
