Lady Rams sweep Cardinals in three

BOONVILLE — The Starmount Lady Rams volleyball team earned a vital Mountain Valley Athletic Conference win last week in Boonville. The Rams swept the Cardinals of East Wilkes in three sets, 25-7, 25-19, 25-9.

The Lady Rams started off the first set high fashion, going on a four-point run before the Cardinals could score their second point. Chloe Ford and Taylor Wood both earned a kill for the Rams to keep the set in their favor. Starmount earned several more points from kills, blocks and aces to take a 18-7 lead over East Wilkes.

Callie Trivette earned a kill, which was followed up by another Ford kill, and another Wood kill. With a 22-7 lead, the Rams were sitting pretty, and took the final three points in easy fashion to take a 25-7 win.

In the second set, the Cardinals were able to shake off the first loss and stick with the Rams. Starmount went on a five-point run before East Wilkes was able to score its first point from a Starmount mistake. The Cardinals earned one point, but things didn’t look great as the Rams were able to earn a point from a block by Wood and Maggie Freed. From there the Rams went on another scoring run to take a 9-3 lead.

East Wilkes started to make its comeback late in the set with kills by Aubri Smithey and Katie Prevette. With the score sitting at 20-15, Prevette earned two kills in a row, which was followed by two aces from Kandice Darnell. The Cardinals were within two points of the Rams as the score sat at 20-18. Starmount decided to take the game back into its hands as it scored the final five points to take a 25-19 win.

The final set saw the Rams take a 25-9 win over East Wilkes. For the first few points, East Wilkes was able to retain the lead until Freed earned two kills in a row to put the Cardinals on its heels. The game was firmly in Starmount’s hands as Liz Cartwright earned an ace to end the set and give Starmount a 3-0 win.

With the win, Starmount moves to 6-3 overall and 3-0 in the MVAC. The Rams travel to West Wilkes on Tuesday afternoon. Results were not available by press deadline.

East Wilkes holds on to an 0-7 overall record, and a 0-3 MVAC record. The Cardinals host Alleghany on Tuesday. Results were not available by press deadline.
