Blown opportunities in the red zone prevented Elkin from scoring against West Wilkes when it needed it Friday night, and that kept them from adding a much needed win.
The Buckin’ Elks (1-7, 1-3 MVAC) handed West Wilkes its first MVAC win of the season in a 20-15 loss. The Elks’ penalties cost them for the second week in a row, as late in the game they were threatening to go ahead late, but instead, they had to settle for a hail mary pass attempt in the closing seconds.
No such miracles were going Elkin’s way.
Elkin travels to Wilkes Central (8-1, 4-1 MVAC) next on Friday night, and things don’t look bright. The week prior, Wilkes Central manhandled Starmount in a blowout win.
The Elks have offensive weapons that make for exciting plays. However, the only way that game can be exciting is if they push all four quarters. Their energy level has gone down it appears, and that affects them.
If they want to finish strong and not really care about the record, they’ll have to turn some heads Friday night. We’ve seen miracles happen in sports before, but it appears that time is about to run out on Elkin’s season no matter how they do against Wilkes Central.
