He was born in Yadkin County to Samuel Albert and Cordelia Williard Poindexter on Feb. 15, 1915.
He married Frances Marie Bowman on Dec. 19, 1936. He was a member of New Home United Methodist Church, where he was the oldest living member.
In his early years, Mr. Poindexter operated a Saw Mill and Lumber Planeing service and was a supervisor in the Die Department at the Carbon Plant in Winston-Salem. He was also a carpenter, tobacco farmer, and businessman. During his retirement he became an avid woodworker, enjoyed gardening, playing Rook and eating out. He was one of the founding members of Yadkin Valley Telephone Cooperative serving on the Board of Directors for over 45 years as a director, vice-president, and president of the corporation. He was one of the organizers of the Fall Creek Fire Department and served that organization until his retirement.
Mr. Poindexter was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of over 55 years, Frances Marie Bowman; brothers, Fred, Gray, S.A., Gorrell, Robert and wife Dale, John; and sisters, Lillian Smitherman, Verna Taylor, Iona Watts, Nina Prim, Alma Hemmings, and Molly Poindexter.
He is survived by three sons, Richard and wife Elaine, Dale, Allen and wife Wanda; six grandchildren, Richard Jr. and wife Leann, Maria Vernon and husband Chris, Natalie Morgan and husband Cameron, Nicholas and wife Twinkle, Jessica and fiance’ Brandon Jackson and Tyler; and six great-grandchildren, Reagan and Gavin Poindexter, Marissa and Garrett Vernon, and Clint and Colt Morgan. Clint is also survived by a very special sister-in-law, Barbara Thore; a special friend, Olivia Reece; and many precious nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, March 11, 2011, at New Home United Methodist Church by Rev. Nancy Krall and Rev. Ben Shepherd. He will lie in-state 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Gentry Family Funeral Service in Yadkinville.
