Mr. Lytle Paul Mathis of Boonville passed away Thursday, April 21, 2011, at Willowbrook Health Care. He was 95.
Mr. Mathis was born Dec. 31, 1915, in Wilkes County to Joel Franklin and Lillie Mae Weatherman Mathis.
He graduated from Ronda High School in 1934. He then went to work for Chatham Manufacturing Company, and, in 1946, he opened Mathis Jewelry Store in Boonville. He ran the jewelry store until his health declined. Mr. Mathis was a member of Boonville Baptist Church, where he served the church in various positions and sang in the choir for years. He was a charter member of the Boonville Lions Club, the Northwest North Carolina Development and was the former President of the N.C. Watchmakers Association. Mr. Mathis was a freelance photographer/writer for the Winston Salem Journal, The Yadkin Ripple, and The Elkin Tribune for many years.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Mathis was preceded in death by several sisters.
He is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Dorothy Coram Mathis; four children, Patricia Hemric and husband Gary, Brenda Adams and husband Robert, Elaine Poindexter and husband Richard, and Walter Mathis and wife Laurie; seven grandchildren, Bliss Hemric, Paula Flanary and husband Jay, Susan Fletcher and husband Allen, Richard Poindexter Jr. and wife Leann, Maria Vernon and husband Chris, Julie Reinhardt and husband Matthew, and Greg Mathis and fiance Whitney Snow; eight great-grandchildren, Jack Flanary, Wes Fletcher, Reagan and Gavin Poindexter, Marissa and Garrett Vernon, and Braeden and Eden Reinhardt; a sister, Edna Mae Wagoner; a brother, Joel Franklin Mathis Jr. and wife Josie; and a sister-in-law, Lou Coram.
A funeral service was conducted at 4 p.m. Saturday, April 23, 2011, at Boonville Baptist Church with Rev. Ken Boaz officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Boonville Baptist Church Building Fund, 201 Baptist Church Road, Boonville, N.C. 27011, or to Willowbrook Health Care Activities Fund, 333 E. Lee St., Yadkinville, N.C. 27055.
