Yadkin County was one of 92 of the state’s 100 counties to have a decrease in the unemployment rate in September, according to a recent N.C. Employment Security Commission report.

Yadkin County’s unemployment rate was 8.8 percent in September, down 0.5 percent from August’s 9.3 percent rate.

This September’s rate for Yadkin County is also down from last year’s rate of 9 percent, with the most recent reported rate at 8.8.

Yadkin County holds one of the lowest unemployment rates in this area, according to the report. Unemployment rates are at 11.5 percent for Wilkes County, 10.6 percent for Iredell County, 10.3 percent for Surry County, 9.5 percent for Davie and Forsyth counties and 9.3 percent for Stokes County.

Unemployment benefits paid in the county from October 2010 through September 2011 totaled $14,574,653.

Yadkin County is one of 31 counties with a rate within the 8.6 to 10 percent range. Fourteen counties had rates below this percentage range, while 55 counties had rates above this percentage range for the month of September.

Rates increased in four counties in September, decreased in 92 and remained unchanged in four.

Only 14 counties had reported unemployment rates below Yadkin’s 8.8 percent, while 85 counties had reported unemployment rates above Yadkin’s rate.

According to ESC figures, 18,309 people were considered to be part of the county’s labor force in September, with 1,603 unemployed. In August, 18,245 people were considered part of Yadkin’s labor force, with 1,693 unemployed.

Yadkin County is one of 42 counties with rates lower than the statewide rate of 10 percent, which dropped from the 10.4 percent rate reported for August.

ESC Chairman Lynn R. Holmes said in a press release, “The September data demonstrate a decrease in the unemployment rate for most of North Carolina’s counties. However, many counties still face high unemployment rates. This agency continues to focus on helping our customers find work and get the assistance they need.”

The state unemployment rate for the month of October will be released on Tuesday, Nov. 22.
