Yadkinville Elementary School has once again produced three champion can recyclers for the 2011-2012 school year. Pictured above from left to right are: Codie Morris (fifth grade), Megan Wagoner (third grade), Dr. James Sheek, principal, and MacKenzie Hauser (first grade). For their families’ efforts the students pictured above have each received a $50 cash prize.
Throughout the year each student who brought in 330 cans (10 pounds) or more, was given an opportunity to create a “quilt square” with an environmental theme of their choice. An additional incentive was a chain necklace, on which students collected a bead for each bag of 330 cans brought to school. The class collecting the highest number of cans school-wide this year was Mrs. Buelin’s 3rd grade class with 12,067 cans. Her students thoroughly enjoyed their award—a swim party and pizza lunch at the Yadkin County Park.
Yadkinville Elementary’s recycling efforts this year have kept approximately 1,600 pounds of cans out of the Caldwell County landfill, where Yadkin’s solid waste is transported. That has earned about $540 that will be used for purchasing needed materials for the school’s media center.
