Yadkin County Farm Bureau met in June at the Yadkinville Farm Bureau office to honor and get to know the recipient of the Yadkin County Farm Bureau Agricultural Scholarship, Kayla Castevens of Hamptonville.

Farm Bureau’s Agricultural Scholarship is awarded to two well qualified students each year, one from each high school district, that will be going on to a university or community college and will be pursuing a degree in an agriculture related field.

The scholarship has a total value of $4,000 to each student, it is awarded $1,000 per year for four years as long as the student continues to qualify and major in an ag related field. Forbush High School did not submit an applicant.

Kayla Castevens of Hamptonville and the daughter of Ken and Penny Castevens, was this year’s recipient of Yadkin County Farm Bureau’s Agriculture Scholarship. Kayla graduated from Starmount High School in June of 2012 and will start at NC A&T State University majoring in animal science in fall of 2012, and hopes to obtain a doctorate in veterinary medicine.

During high school Kayla was active in the Starmount FFA Chapter. She was selected to receive the Yadkin County Farm Bureau Agricultural Scholarship due to her passion and understanding of agriculture, involvement in organizations such as FFA, her success academically, being an example of a young leader in her school and community and her interest in pursuing a degree and career in agriculture.

Yadkin County Farm Bureau President Justin Somers wished Kayla the best of luck on her future endeavors and much success as she starts this next section of her life.

“Agriculture is a constantly changing industry, and we will need leaders on the cutting edge of their fields of expertise so that agriculture will continue to be the force that drives the state and national economy,” Somers said. “Twenty percent of the American work force is employed in agriculture or agribusiness and 2010 total farm cash receipts in North Carolina totaled over $9.6 billion. It is an honor and privilege to award Kayla this scholarship, to aid her in obtaining her goals.”
