Unconfirmed media stories are reporting that Andy Griffith has died.
He was 86.
According to WAVY-TV in Dare County, Griffith’s home, emergency medical services were called to his Highway 64 home in Roanoke Island shortly after 7 a.m. this morning.
Bill Friday, former president of the University of North Carolina and friend to the Griffith family, confirmed the actor’s death to WITN-TV just moments ago.
Griffith was born in Mount Airy and went on to fame starring as Sheriff Andy Taylor on “The Andy Griffith Show” from 1960 to 1968.
