A preventable disaster

For many of us, the recent heat wave has been little more than an inconvenience. We may complain about our car’s air condition not cooling fast enough, or the headaches that come with the heat, or the fact that it’s just not that fun to go outside.

But for some, a heat wave can be deadly. That was the reasoning behind the Yadkin County Commissioners’ decision to begin distributing fans for residents who are 65 years or older. This may not be the most glamorous work the Yadkin County can do, but it’s one of the most important tasks they have – protecting the citizens.

The county has purchased hundreds of fans to allow senior citizens to come pick them up. For home bound residents, the Yadkin County Sheriff’s Office is available to distribute them.

According to the Department of Social Services, about 3,000 Yadkin County residents who are 65 or older don’t have air conditioning.

A heat wave like the one we’ve had – with temperatures reaching 103.6 degrees on June 29 and 103.2 degrees on June 30 – could be deadly.

However, like Commissioner Chairman Kevin Austin said, it can be preventable.

Residents wishing to learn more about this program may call the county manager’s office at 679-4200 and those who need home delivery service may call the Yadkin County Sheriff’s Office at 679-4217. Fan will be available at the Department of Social Services office at 250 Willow St. in Yadkinville, the Yadkin Rescue Squad and several fire stations.

Meanwhile, if you know neighbors, family members and acquaintances who are senior citizens and don’t have air conditioning, see if you can help them. Don’t assume they know about the program or that they’re going to get the fan themselves. Maybe you’ll need to give someone a ride to the county office or help them out in some way.

You may just save a life.
