MOCKSVILLE - Top-seeded Mocksville-Davie County Post 54 was upset in the quarterfinals of the American Legion Area III playoffs last week.

After taking a one-game series lead with a 1-0 victory over fifth-seeded Rowan County Post 342 last Monday, Mocksville seized control of the series with a 5-3 triumph in Game 2.

With their backs against the wall, Rowan battled back to knot the series at 2-all with back-to-back wins on Thursday and Saturday. Post 342 won 6-4 in Game 3 before tying things up with a 10-5 victory in Game 4.

In a winner-takes-all fifth game in Mocksville on Sunday, Rowan completed the improbable comeback with a hard-fought 3-2 victory to take the series and advance into the Area III Semifinals.

Post 342 will take on the No. 2 seed from the North in High Point in the third round this week.

Mocksville is led by Forbush standouts Ben Temple, Mason Doub, Josh Faircloth and Brice Merritt. Post 54 captured the Southern Division championship during the regular season, earning the top seed.
