Lula “Mae” Atkins Cain Carter, 81, of Yadkinville, passed away Thursday, Feb. 12, 2009 at Forsyth Medical Center. 

She was born Sep. 30, 1927 in Surry County to the late James Dewey and Lily Vernon Atkins.  Mrs. Carter was retired from Hanes Hosiery and was a member of Union Cross Friends Church. 

She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Fred James Cain Sr.; and her second husband and best friend for 31 years, William Zeno Carter. 

Surviving are her children, Peggy (Larry) Hennings, Fred (Sandra) Cain, Shirley (Mike) Williard, all of Yadkinville; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one sister, Pearl Matthews; and several nieces and nephews.

Her funeral was conducted on Saturday, Feb. 14 at Gentry Family Chapel by the Rev. Archie Creed and the Rev. Reece Wall.

Burial followed at Union Cross Friends Church Cemetery.

The family received friends on Friday, Feb. 13 at Gentry Family Funeral Service in Yadkinville. The family wants to say a very special thanks to Dr. Cann, Dr. Adkinson, the staff of 9 General TICU1, and the ninth floor Palliative Care Unit at Forsyth Medical Center for their loving care and support.
