The final installment of Music in the Park at Yadkinville Community Park will take place on Sept. 21 at 6 p.m.

With this being the final event of the summer, the Yadkin Civitan group pulled out all the stops and chose Too Much Sylvia, a cover band that plays songs from the 50s through today.

Too Much Sylvia is based in Charlotte. The band has been performing together for 21 years and perform an average of 100 shows a year. They specialize in events ranging from festivals, corporate parties, birthday parties, wedding receptions and even divorce parties.

“One divorce party we played for was for a guy that we had also played for his wedding reception,” said Rick Lee, the band’s keyboardist and vocalist. “That was interesting.”

The band consists of Lee, guitarist and vocalist Steve Long, bass guitarist and vocalist Eddy Howie and drummer Don Leonard.

Too Much Sylvia has a very extensive song list with over 100 songs on their roster.

“We’ll play the songs that everyone has heard though the years from the 50s and 60s to things that people can hear on the radio today,” Lee said.

Lee said that while their song list is impressive they are more focused on their stage presence. Lee claims that what makes Too Much Sylvia special is the band’s energy and interaction on stage.

“The presentation is not just a band that stands up there and plays,” Lee said. “The band is very interactive with the audience and entertaining.”

Lee said that the band has several different costumed acts. They have a Jersey Boys performance that involves choreography, a ZZ Top performance that comes complete with long beards, a Boy George performance in which one band member fully decks out in Boy George attire and makeup to perform ‘Karma Chameleon’ and a Supremes performance where the band dresses in gold sequin nightgowns.

Lee said that each of Too Much Sylvia’s performances are based on the event and the people in the audience.

“We don’t do a set list. We’ll play a couple of tunes and kind of see what the crowd is digging on and what they’re not, and we’ll head in that direction. We just kind of call it as we go,” Lee said.

The band has also put out a couple of beach music albums that feature their original songs. Lee said that they’ve enjoyed some success with those albums, most notably “Red Sunglasses.”

“We sell t-shirts and we’ll sell the red sunglasses with them and they’ll put the sunglasses on even if it’s at night,” Lee said.

Lee said that it’s been suggested that the band lean more towards the beach music sound and that they are definitely taking that into consideration but they still plan to follow the audience’s lead on the night of the show.

“The variety is what really seems to work for this band,” Lee said. “We’ll touch on a variety and songs that everybody still hears on the radio.”

Lee said that they were excited to be invited to their first performance in Yadkinville and they hope that they will be bringing some outside visitors in.

“This will be our first time in Yadkinville so hopefully we can meet a lot of new people and bring a few people from outside the area,” Lee said. “We’ve had some response on our Facebook page and in our email of people saying they are glad to see we’re playing in Yadkinville because it’s closer than driving to see us in Mount Airy or Statesville.”

Lee said that the band hopes to see a good crowd that night and encourages people to come out even if they’re not familiar with their music.

“You’re going to see three lead vocalists on lots of different songs,” Lee said. “The harmonies are very good. The song list is probably what is most attractive but we’re also entertaining, we’ll get people involved and it’s a fun show.”
