With Jana Matthews and Nichole Hutchens in scoring position in the final frame, Jessica White ripped a double down the third-base line to score two runs. Brittany White then drove Jessica White’s pinch runner home with a double for a 5-2 lead.

Courtney Groce got the pitching win for the Rams, going the distance. Jessica White, who was Groce’s catcher, and Matthews each finished with two hits. White had three RBIs, while she and Matthews scored twice.
Starmount is scheduled to play at North Forsyth tonight (Thursday) and will travel to West Iredell on Saturday.

EAST SURRY 6, STARMOUNT 1: The Cardinals’ offense came up with a big sixth inning — with a little help from the Starmount pitching staff — to come away with a 6-1 victory on Saturday in Pilot Mountain.
With the scored tied at 1-1 in the bottom of the sixth, the Cardinals scored five times to take a comfortable lead.
Brett Smith was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning before Walt Tuttle walked. Jayson Murphy doubled, bringing home Smith. After that, Troy Jessup walked while Lathan Hunter was hit by a pitch. The next batter, Austin Tilley, singled to clear the bases.
The Cardinals used a two-man rotation consisting of starter Cody Rodgers and Hunter, who entered the game in the fifth inning and got the win.
The duo combined on a two hitter. Rodgers allowed the lone run for Starmount, but struck out nine. He also walked five. In his three innings of work, Hunter struck out three and walked two.
East Surry is now 2-0, while Starmount fell to 0-1. Chris Andrews suffered the loss for the Rams in the team’s season opener.
