The Yadkin County Public Library, in partnership with Yadkin Christian Ministries, will be providing free tax preparation through the IRS’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) programs.
The mission of these programs is to provide free basic tax return preparation for low-to moderate income taxpayers, elderly taxpayers and taxpayers with disabilities, limited English proficiency or military. To qualify, families must have an income of less than $50,000. Free tax preparation will be held at the Yadkin County Public Library, beginning on Wednesday, February 6, 2012 and Thursday, February 7, 2013 from 9:00 am – 12:00 pm and will continue each Wednesday and Thursday until April 11, 2012. Tax assistance is a free service that is on a first come, first served basis.
STORYTIME for preschoolers will be held on Thursday, January 17, 2013 at 10:00 am at the Yadkin County Public Library. STORYTIME is an early literacy program specifically geared for preschoolers 2-5 years old. The theme for this week’s program will be “My Teddy Bear”, featuring the letter T” and highlighting the literacy skill, . All STORYTIME programs are free and open to the public. Make plans now to bring your child or grandchild for an entertaining and educational experience, with stories, music and crafts as we help get them “Ready to Read” with the “Every Child Ready to Read @ your Library” program.
NWRL will host the High School Quiz Bowl 2013 on Saturday, January 19, 2013 at the Andy Griffith Playhouse in Mount Airy. Quiz Bowl teams from the high schools in Alleghany, Stokes, Surry and Yadkin counties are eligible to participate. Registration begins at 9:30 am with completion beginning at 10:00 am. Come out and support your local high school!
NWRL will host their annual Traveling Photography Contest. Contest is open to all registered patrons of the Northwestern Regional Library system, with the exception of individuals whose primary source of income is photography. The fees for each entry are $5.00 for adults and $1.00 for youth with no limit on total number of entries. Entries must be received no later than Friday, February 22, 2013 at any NWRL branch. A photography workshop will be held on Tuesday, March 19, 2013 at 5:30 pm, followed by the opening reception at 6:45 pm. The library is holding a book sale in the front entryway. Like new hardcover books are available for $1.00 and movies are 25 cents or 5 for $1.00, making them a great bargain! All proceeds will be used to purchase new books.
On display at the library is a collection of “Musicals” collector plates, featuring “Oklahoma”, “Gone with the Wind”, The Wizard of Oz” and “The Sound of Music”. These are part of a larger collection owned by Mabel Cranfill of Hamptonville and will be on display through the end of January.
The Yadkin County Public Library will be closed on Monday, January 21, 2013 in observance of the Martin Luther King Day. The library will reopen at 8:30 am on Tuesday, January 22, 2013. The Yadkin County Public Library is a member of the Northwestern Regional Library system, comprised of libraries in Alleghany, Stokes, Surry and Yadkin counties. The library’s normal operating hours are as follows: Mondays and Thursdays 8:30 am – 6:30 pm and Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 8:30 am – 5:30 pm.
