Winter weather made its way into western North Carolina on January 17 and 18, and Yadkin County experienced its first winter storm system of the season.

However, projected snow accumulation was not nearly as bad as predicted.

The inclement weather was scheduled to hit Yadkin County and the Elkin area at approximately 3 p.m. on Jan. 17 and continued through to midnight.

Accuweather.com predicted snow accumulations would be between four to eight inches but only amounted to approximately an inch. Temperatures did make a rapid drop from the mid-40s to below freezing as the night went on making for icy conditions on the road overnight and early the next morning.

In anticipation of the winter weather schools Yadkin County Schools were released at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday and school was cancelled on Jan. 18.

Yadkin County Schools will schedule a makeup day but a date will not be determined until next week.

Road preparations were difficult due to the excessive amount of rain the county experienced last week. Crews with the North Carolina Department of Transportation were not able to pre-treat the roads with a brine solution because the rain would have immediately washed it off.

“When you don’t have rain and you know that you are going to have a storm coming through you can pre-treat the roads with a brine solution,” said Jerry Higgins, a communications officer for North Carolina Department of Transportation. “When you have rain like we’re having now then we can’t pre-treat the roads because it will just wash away.”

Higgins said that the Yadkin and Elkin areas were fortunate because temperatures were not particularly cold leading up to the winter storm so accumulation didn’t start immediately.

Yadkinville Police Department reported that there were no wrecks related to the weather.

Yadkin County may be bracing for more winter weather this week. The Weather Channel is reporting that there is a 90 percent chance of a wintry mix during the day and a 30 percent chance of snow showers in the evening.
