EAST BEND - With the season coming to a close, area wrestling squads are preparing for the Mountain Valley Conference Tournament over the final weeks of the season.

Forbush, fresh off its first conference victory of the season, has five matches remaining on the year, including one against Yadkin County rival Starmount. The Rams, 4-2 in league action, have four duals left on their schedule.

The Falcons knocked off Alleghany last Tuesday to pick up their first MVAC win of the year, 42-17.

The Trojans, who only wrestled at five weight classes, went 4-1 in those matches. Alleghany forfeited six classes with three no-matches.

Storm Long picked up Forbush’s lone win on the mat at 126, pinning Josh Cochran in the second period. Freshman Isaac McMillan nearly upset Alleghany’s Justin Todd (22-7) at 145, falling late 6-5.

Starmount edged East Wilkes 36-35 Wednesday night in their last time out to notch their fourth conference victory.

The Rams lost eight of the 14 matches, but recorded four pins and two forfeits in their six triumphs to pull out the win.

Sergio Sarinara, Ian Fennell, Michael Wood and Garrett Stokes all pinned their opponent to power Starmount past the Cardinals.

Fennell (29-4), the 10th-ranked wrestler according to Retro Rankings bounced back from just his fourth defeat of the season, a 6-4 loss to West Iredell’s Travis Reed last week. Wood (28-1) won his 15th-straight match since losing to Forbush’s Dylan Edwards in December.

Forbush and Starmount square off Tuesday night before the Falcons take on East Wilkes Thursday in a make-up match.
