Barn quilts are gaining popularity in Surry and Yadkin counties.

The colorful, wooden quilt blocks adorning barns, sheds, and even houses are adding interest along county roads. Surry Community College is offering two barn quilt classes at the Elkin Center, 1461 N. Bridge St. in Elkin.

The first class will meet on Friday, March 8 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The second class is scheduled for Friday, April 19 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Students may make a 2’ x 2’, 3’ x 3’, or 4’ x 4’ wooden barn quilt block. Each class is limited to six students. Interested persons should call Terri Cockerham at (336) 386-3244 or Sonnie Hardy (336) 386-3229.

Barn quilt trails are becoming tourist attractions. Recently, the Yadkin Arts Council established a Yadkin County Quilt Trail with 30 locations on the trail. For more information, go to www.yadkinarts.org.
