Yadkinville residents can expect to see a fireworks display once again this July 4.

The Yadkinville Town Board of Commissioners voted unanimously to provide the $4,000 funding required to pull off the event for the town.

Yadkinville Civitan Club member and Downtown Business Association (DBA) representative Jerry Carlton came before the board on March 4 to request that the town fund the fireworks display as it did last year.

Carlton said that the DBA will work with the Yadkinville Volunteer Fire Department and Yadkinville Police Department to put on its annual parade, which is planned for 10 a.m. on July 4.

The Yadkinville Civitan Club will host a special music in the park that evening prior to the fireworks display.

Mayor Hubert Gregory said that he was in strong support of the town continuing with its funding of the fireworks. He stated that there are few events held by the town that draw the community together to that degree and though the town doesn’t have the parking or location that East Bend has to offer, he feels that it is an equally great display.

Other topics from the meeting:

-The board discussed the possibility of requiring business license within the town limits. The board asked downtown business owner Jerry Carlton’s opinion on the proposed fees. Carlton told the board that if the fees were reasonable he thought they could be successful.

Town Commissioner Gene Brannon said that the reason for the fees is to allow the town a way to keep track of the businesses in town. Town Manager Christopher Ong said that the fees could range from $5 to $200 but said that most office-based businesses would be on the lower end of the scale.

“We had Paul [Lowe] compile a list of businesses in town and there were businesses on that list that aren’t there anymore and some that we didn’t even know they were there,” Brannon said. “We need to come up with a system that would allow us to know what businesses are in town and allow us better control of businesses we might not want in town.”

The board decided to table the decision and hold a work session later in the month to discuss the details of the fee further before bringing it to a vote.

-Town Manager Ong presented a proposed list of members for the Yadkinville Appearance Committee. The board would be composed of eight members. Ong was able to get the participation of seven Yadkinville residents and one participant who owns land in the town. The board asked that Ong combine the former Yadkinville Community Park and the appearance committee and create one committee with three to four members from each list. Ong agreed to bring back a revised list to the April meeting.

-The board voted unanimously to renew the lease for the Farmer’s Market and also renewed deer urban archery for 2014.

-Mayor Pro-Tem Eddie Norman suggested that the board approve an additional vacation day for town employees on July 5. Norman said that the July 4 holiday falls on a Friday in 2013 and he felt that approving the additional vacation day would allow town employees the ability to take a vacation or spend time with their families and that he felt it was well deserved. The board voted unanimously in favor of the vacation day.

-The board is planning to host a shred day for the community. The service will cost $765 to provide a shred truck for three hours and will include a technician on site for the three-hour period. Town commissioners urged the town manager to partner with the Yadkin County Chamber of Commerce and other businesses and organizations in town to help reduce the cost of the event to the town. Ong agreed to get a commitment from a partner in the event.
