Yadkinville’s Rhett Bonner had a career night in Guilford College’s 77-72 win over Hampden-Sydney College last Wednesday night.
The North Forsyth graduate, who also played at Forbush during his high school days, scored a career best 28 points in the victory. He had 19 in the second half, helping Guilford to rally.
Bonner is a senior with the Quakers, who entered this week 5-1 and ranked No. 6 nationally in D3Hoops.com’s top 25 poll.
Hampden-Sydney led 38-30 at halftime, draining eight three-pointers. But Guilford went on a 10-0 run early in the second half to claw back. Bonner hit back-to-back three-pointers, helping tying the game 50-50 and then giving the Quakers a 53-50 advantage.
Another Yadkinville native, Gabriel Lowder, chipped in during the comeback and beat his own career best for scoring.
The sophomore finished with 14 points, 12 of them coming after the break. Lowder also played his high school ball at North Forsyth.
Elkin High graduate Tyler Sanborn scored 12 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the season.
Guilford’s Yadkin-Surry connection helped the Quakers finish third in the nation last season.
Through Guilford’s first six games, Bonner is averaging 15.8 points per contest, second-best on the team behind Clay Henson (16.2).
Bonner has averaged 31 minutes of court time per game, as well as 4.3 rebounds and 3.5 assists. He’s 13 of 32 from three-point land (40.6 percent).
Sanborn is averaging a double-double — 14.8 points and 12.5 rebounds per game. Lowder is averaging 7.0 points and 2.0 rebounds per contest in a reserve role, seeing about 15 minutes per game.
Guilford, which played Wednesday night against Maryville College (after press time for this issue), will play two games this weekend in the Lon Varnell Classic in Sewanee, Tenn.
The Quakers won’t play at home again until facing Randolph on Jan. 9.
