They say all good things must come to an end, and athletic season are no exception. The Yadkin Stingrays finished their 2010 summer season Saturday on a high note.

The team finished second overall, besting their third place finish of last year. "This is our first time finishing second. This was the best year in a long time for our 10 and under group," Coach Joy Prim said.

"It was just incredible for our team to place second out of six incredibly huge teams. Even our little kids stepped their game up," Coach Jillian Kowalcik said.

"Sophia Barron and Maris Bey really stepped it up for us in the relays that gave us crucial points towards the second place finish," Prim said.

The team also finished their first home meet with a win on July 20 against the Chadwyck Flyers. "It was a bit of a surprise. Everyone pulled together. The older kids especially put it all on the line, being their last home meet," Kowalcik said.

Last Tuesday, the Stingrays were able to edge the visiting Flyers 390-363, and were able to go into the conference meet with the confidence of a win.

"It was our first time beating Chadwyck in a few years, so it was big motivator going into conference," Prim said.

Being the last home meet of the season, the team decided to have a little fun with lifeguards Lindsay Boles and Kayla Trivette and Coaches Joy Prim and Jillian Kowalcik. The four swam in the team medley against as a fair well of sorts to the season.

"The kids haven't seen us (Prim and Kowalcik) compete, so that was pretty cool to be able to show them we can still get after it," Prim said.

"The fun relay was so awesome. I think we may have started a new tradition for the last home meet of the season," Kowalcik said.

After the final results from the conference meet had been compiled, and the points tallied, the Stingrays met one last time at the Yadkin Pool Monday evening for their annual end of season banquet.

"This is one of the best seasons we've had in team history. We've had great unity and competed well all season," Prim said. "It's sad to see the seniors go, but it was great to see them go out on such a high note."

During the banquet, team awards were given out to the most improved swimmers in respective age groups. Kayli Murphy recieved the Girls 10 & Under, Adam Smith received the 10 & Under Boys, Sophia Barron received the 11 & Under Girls, and Shay Stewart received the 11 & Under Boys.

Two additional awards were given out to two seniors leaving, after spending several summers swimming with the Stingrays. Taylor Waddell and Dustin Brannam both received the Golden Stingray Leadership Awards for their contribution to the team.

"I'm so proud. These kids are awesome. I've only been here three years, but this was the best group of kids we've had since I've been here," Kowalcik said.

As the 2010 season has come to a close, the bulk of the team will be back next summer and make a chase at winning the elusive conference championship.
