He was born June 17, 1917, in Yadkin County to the late James and Nettie Murphy Vestal. He was a World War Veteran in the U.S. Army. He was a Medical Technician and served in the Northern Solomons and the Western Pacific and received a Good Conduct Medal, Victory Medal, Asiatic Pacific Service Medal with thre Bronzes Service Stars, and American Theater Service Medal.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ruth Caudle Vestal; grandchild, Eldon Scott Speer; great grandchild, Diamond Speer; sisters, Kate Willard, Minnie Mae Davis, Eva Tate; brothers, Billy Vestal, Hobert Vestal, Jay Vestal.
He is survived by his children, Richard “Pete” and wife Janet Vestal, Nancy and husband Eldon Speer, Glenda and husband Jeff Hudspeth Sisk; grandchildren, Michelle and husband Jonathan North, Johnny Ray Vestal, Rodney and husband Shanna Speer, Stephen and wife Wendy Speer, Robert and wife Carrie Sisk, Tammy Sisk, Amy Sisk; 10 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
His funeral service was held Saturday, Sept. 25, 2010, at Pilot View Friends Meeting by the Rev. Nelson Puffenbarger and Brother Lawrence Warden. Burial followed at church cemetery with Full Military Honors by the VFW Post 10346. The family will received friends Friday, Sept. 24, 2010, at Gentry Family Funeral Service in Yadkinville.
