HAMPTONVILLE — Sticks of old dynamite found in a vacant home on Longtown Road on Tuesday prompted a call to the Winston-Salem Police Department’s Bomb Squad and resulted in a controlled burn of the building.

Around 4 p.m. West Yadkin Fire Department was dispatched routine to a location near the intersection of Longtown and Shaw roads, according to Keith Vestal, Yadkin emergency services director, but he couldn’t confirm any details of the incident at the time.

After arriving on the scene, West Yadkin requested assistance from Arlington Fire Department in the form of a brush truck and tanker, Vestal reported.

West Yadkin Fire Department later posted a photo to their Facebook page revealing more details of the incident. According to the post, “the Bomb Squad was on site assisting the YCSO with a vacant home that had several sticks of old dynamite inside. The dynamite had been there so long that most of it was deteriorated to the point it could not be simply contained and removed. The bomb squad determined the safest way to dispose of the dynamite was to do a controlled ignition and burn down of the structure after completing some preliminary steps to neutralize the TNT. The burn down was a success and the TNT has been fully eliminated. The location on Longtown at Shaw Rd will continue to smolder throughout the night.”
