BOONVILLE — The North Carolina Department of Transportation held a public information meeting in Boonville on Tuesday to share the design plan for improvements to the intersection of N.C. 67 and U.S. 601 and obtain feedback from area residents on the plan.
“We’re going to be improving the radius at the intersection to help with some turning movements. We’re also going to revising the lane configurations so at southbound 601, we’re going to be adding a new right-turn lane and we’re going to be putting exclusive left-turn lanes on the other legs of the intersection in order to help traffic flow through the area,” said Andy Young of Stewart Engineering, which designed the project.
Improvements also will be made to the curb and gutter and sidewalks at the intersection. Young said according to the current funding, NCDOT should begin acquiring the land needed for the project in June of 2019 with construction expected to begin in June of 2020.
Town leaders are pleased with the project plans.
“It was exciting to meet with Department of Transportation and Stewart personnel to discuss the upgrades planned for the intersection of Main Street (N.C. 67) and Carolina Avenue (U.S. 601) in Boonville,” said Boonville Commissioner Bonnie Lasky.
“These enhancements will make our primary intersection safer by adding turn lanes and pedestrian crossing improvements. I believe that once this project is completed, it will be the catalyst needed to spur economic growth as envisioned in Boonville’s Economic Development Strategic Plan,” she said.
Lasky added her thanks to Town Administrator Sarah Harris, who has worked to bring the project to the attention of local officials.
“Thank you to our Yadkin County elected officials; County Manager Lisa Hughes; Boonville town board and staff members; and the Piedmont Triad Regional Council for their support. As in all projects, the construction phase may cause some inconveniences, but the end result will be worth it.”
Though unrelated to the intersection project, on Tuesday, NCDOT began work on resurfacing of the pavement on U.S. 601/Carolina Avenue through Boonville.
