Volunteer wrestling coach charged with sex crimes

A Jonesville man who volunteered as a wrestling coach at Starmount High School is facing multiple sex abuse charges.

According to the Yadkin County Sheriff’s Office, a report was received on Sept. 27 regarding inappropriate contact between a volunteer wrestling coach and a student at Starmount High School. After an investigation was conducted, it was determined that sexual contact had occurred between November 2017 and May 2018.

Subsequently, warrants were issued for five felony counts of statutory rape of a child who is 15 years of age or younger, one felony count of sexual activity with a student and one felony count of crime against nature for 54-year-old Russell Paul O’Donnell.

O’Donnell was arrested on Monday and placed under a secured $500,000 bond with a first appearance in court Tuesday.
