Students from Boonville Elementary School visited Astoria Ltd. Equestrian Center last week as part of the Horse Tails literary program. Horse trainer and owner Victoria Shaw and her mother Ginny Stametti have partnered with the school and the Boonville Library for several years now to provide books for the students from the classic Black Stallion series.

Stametti said the program is a wonderful way to get children engaged in reading. Earlier in the year Shaw brought one of her horses to the school for the students to see. On Tuesday, first- and fourth-graders had the chance to visit the horse farm where they learned more about the Arabian horse as well as the tack used to ride.

Students also had a chance to read aloud to the horses. Many of Shaw’s riding students also assisted with the event. Stametti said it’s a great experience for them as well to get the chance to lead some presentations for the younger children on horses.
