Yadkin Valley Community School enrollment now open

Staff Report

ELKIN — The Yadkin Valley Community School is ready to begin its third year. One change for the upcoming year is the addition of Lisa Freeman to the school’s staff.

Freeman brings 20 years of teaching experience to the classroom. When asked about her teaching philosophy, Freeman said, “My passion is helping a student grow into the best person possible. That means different things for every person. I believe in teaching students to love learning through positive experiences with reading, math, social studies and science.”

Over the summer, the teachers and board members have been working on improvements to the classroom, scheduling field trips, ordering new curriculum materials and creating individualized lesson plans for each child who is enrolled.

The staff and parents also have been busy planning a 12-month raffle. The school is selling tickets for a chance to win one of 12 prizes. Tickets cost $10 a piece and each month a ticket is drawn to win a family-friendly package. Prizes include passes and gift certificates for bowling, movies, kayaking, Winston-Salem Dash ballgames, children’s museums, restaurants, hotel suites and much more. Funds raised during the raffle will be used to purchase curriculum materials for the school.

Enrollment for the 2017-18 academic year is now open.

“We have a couple of spots open for next year. I hope that if people are interested in finding out more about the school, they will call to schedule a tour. It’s quite different from a traditional school setting. So we’re happy to answer any questions and show families around the indoor and outdoor classrooms,” says Kimberly Seipel-Parks, board president.

This K-6 school offers small, multi-age classrooms, a Montessori-inspired curriculum and many hands-on learning opportunities. Students are allowed to move through the curriculum at their own pace and explore areas of their own interests.

The mission of the Yadkin Valley Community School is: To develop a unique educational environment that fosters the whole child by encouraging academic excellence, joy of learning, creativity, curiosity, mindfulness, self-empowerment and community awareness.
