Kids Triathlon slated for Aug. 19

SPARTA — The fifth annual Kids Triathlon will be held Aug. 19, beginning at the Duncan Recreation Center pool, 490 Trojan Ave., above and behind Alleghany High School, and will continue on that area’s town streets and the high school track. This is a swim, bike, run event for youngsters from 4 to 14 years of age to start them on the road to an active lifestyle that will contribute to their lifelong health and wellness.

“The Sparta Kids Triathlon is sponsored by the Alleghany Wellness Center and was created to encourage youth to have fun staying active,” said April Brady, organizer of the event. “By focusing on swimming, biking and running, it is our hope that participants will build lifelong healthy habits of setting goals for physical achievement.”

Brady said she did not start participating in competitive triathlons until she was 40 and was initially intimidated. She hopes an event like this can build confidence in a youngster’s ability at a young age. She encourages parents who have never entered their youngster in this event and are not sure where to start, to reach out for assistance by contacting the Alleghany Wellness Center at 336-372-2944 and asking for Brady or Center Director Steve Mason. They can answer questions about the race course, what participants should wear and other details of the event.

Every effort is made to facilitate youngsters getting involved. Participants are permitted to use flotation devices during the swim portion and bicycles with training wheels also are allowed. The Alleghany Wellness Center offers swim classes that can help build confidence and skill in the water.

Brady said youngsters are asked to supply their own bicycle. If a child doesn’t have a bicycle, she said to call her about the availability of one.

Registration is $20 advance and $25 the day of the event for the first child. Each sibling can participate for an additional $10. Advance registration is available online. Go to alleghanywellnesscenter.com/events and follow the Sparta Kids Triathlon link.
